Drawing and Painting: Introduction and Independent Study
Mondays 7-10 pm
Beginning July 21, 2008
6 weeks
$150
In this class, we will begin with the most vital aspects of studio art making: drawing, generating ideas, value/color mixing, composition, using photo reference, and mixed media. We will begin with graphite and charcoal drawing while discussing our ideas, then move on to color mixing with oil paint, dissecting and transferring photo images onto canvas and finally building supports. The goal is to quickly build confidence in all aspects of studio art making. The students will progress into a class that will include independent study, with students making their own work with focused guidance by the instructor for each project. Whether you want to work in drawing or painting, abstract or realistic, fine art or illustration this is the class for you. I have built my knowledge through making fine art, a comic strip, illustrating children’s books, and clay animations. All levels are welcome.

Introduction to Stained Glass
Tuesdays 6:30-9:30 pm
Beginning July 22, 2008
6 weeks
$180
In this six-week course, students will delve into the basics of creating a leaded glass window. Rather than the commonly taught technique which uses copper foil, students will be working with lead came of various profiles, or widths. Starting with creating designs that take structural integrity into consideration, a heavy focus will be placed on cutting glass - the heart of the craft. Students will “lead-up” windows, solder, then putty them, ending with a solid panel that can be suspended from hooks.

The Art and Craft of Skateboard Design introduces students to the multifaceted process of skateboard deck fabrication. The program covers a broad spectrum of art making practices from wood veneer lamitaion and fine woodworking to graphic design, drawing and painting.
The students begin by learning the process of thin air wood lamination. Thin layers of maple veneer are glued together, placed over a styrofoam form and inserted into an airtight bag. The air inside the bag is then drawn out using a specially designed pump and one way valve. The atmospheric pressure surrounding the veneer bends the wood over the styrofoam form, allowing the glue to dry over night and give the deck its distinctive shape. This part of the process is done in assembly line fashion, requiring teamwork and communication.
The students then learn how to individually shape and san their boards using wood rasps and sandpaper.
After their boards are refined, students are taught various painting and design techniques to create their graphics including stenciling, masking and collage.
The goal of the Art and Craft of Skateboard Design is to broaden the scope of the participants' artistic horizons by exposing students to various processes and relating them to a common outcome.
